Three policemen escaped being lynched in Unguwar Kofar Dumi area of Bauchi state, by an irate mob for rescuing a suspected ritualist said to have charmed a 15-year-old girl. It was gathered by Vanguard that the suspected ritualist came to the area at about 11: 30 am yesterday, August 27 and he was lurking around until later when he allegedly touched the victim who was a passer-by and she collapsed instantly. According to an eyewitness, Malam Bashiru, the suspected ritualist attempted to flee the scene when realised that the girl was unconscious, but he was not so lucky as he was grabbed by some youths in the area, who asked him to bring the girl back to normalcy or else they would kill him. He refused to do as he had been told and more youths started trooping to the scene with sticks and other weapons with which they used in beating him before the community elders intervened. The suspect reportedly confessed after he was taken by the elders to one of their houses, saying he used charm on the girl. He later performed certain rituals that revived the girl. The elders were said to have called the police who came and took the suspected ritualist away. But before they took him away in their van, they were attacked by the mob who injured them and the ward head of the area. Confirming the incident, the ward head of the area, Malam Adamu Alin Bayi, said they intervened to stop the rampaging youths from taking law into their hands even as he said the policemen and himself were injured by the mob. Sometimes security agents are at the receiving end of mob attack. About two weeks ago, a policeman attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ikeja who had gone to arrest a phone thief was almost lynched .
