A policeman attached to the Ijaiye Ojokoro Police Station in Lagos state was beaten to a point of coma by a commercial bus driver named Idowu Arisekola, his conductor and some touts. According to report, the policeman, Akintunde Adepoju, was controlling the traffic at the Ajala bus stop when the driver and his conductor, who is still at large, confronted him, thereby causing traffic as his bus was obstructing the road. They then took the policeman to a joint where they were joined by some other touts to torture and beat him to a point of coma, before he was saved by a police patrol team, Punch reports. While trying to evade being arrested, Idowu drove the bus recklessly, ramming into another vehicle. He was arraigned by the police before an Ojokoro Magistrate’s Court in the Ifako-Ijaiye area of the state on a 10 count charge of unlawful traffic obstruction, resistance of lawful arrest, reckless driving and assault. The charges read in part: “That you Idowu Arisekola, and your bus conductor now at large, on August 5, 2014, at about 4.30pm at Ajala bus stop, Ijaiye Ojokoro, in the Ikeja Magisterial District unlawfully captured and detained a police traffic officer attached to the Ijaiye Ojokoro Police Station while discharging his lawful duty and attempted to kill him by moving him to a spot at Adura field. “That you employed a group of area boys to join you and beat him up to the point of coma before he was later rescued by a police patrol team.” The defendant who appeared before the magistrate, Mrs. T. Akani, however pleaded not guilty to the offences. The magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties each in the like sum and the case was adjourned till September 15, 2014. Sometimes security agents are attacked by civilians while carrying out their duties. Some days back, three policemen escaped being lynched in Unguwar Kofar Dumi area of Bauchi state, by an irate mob for rescuing a suspected ritualist.
